LIZARD SKIN KNEE SHIN COMBOS
Written by Jon Beckett To be brutally honest I have never been a fan of the knee/skin combo pad. Why? Well the majority of them don’t sit well on my chubby wee legs, however recently, after destroying by other long term pads, I was swayed to the dark side…then these new Lizard Skin Knee Shin combos arrived at dwhq.
The Lizard Skins, Softcell Knee Shin Combo, is just out, it’s so new that none of them have even gotten dirty yet! We got a sneak peek of these back at the World Cup in May…since then the LZ guys have been working furiously to get them out to the masses.
Knee and Shin Combination Unique features include the flappy, strappy knee wrap. You don’t need to take those shoes off before fitting the pad to ones leg, like all the other pads out there. The shin section has a virtually full wrap of padding around your calf. Inside the knee cup there’s a few extra features which help keep the pad on your knee...look at the image and you’ll see all the extra little ramps and pads all designed to hold the pad in place while you’re pedalling toward the slope. Here’s the official line on them: Our new Knee Shin Combo features SOFTCELL Technology (ventilated 6mm EVA inner foam), double padded under plastic caps, tear resistant mesh to increase ventilation and durability, bonded moisture wicking lining, custom designed moulded plastic caps with 14 air flow vents, soft neoprene Y-strap system behind the knee provides comfort and support, 4 fully adjustable D-ring straps prevent shifting and sliding, extended wrap for added protection, specially shaped padded knee cup to maintain placement, impact padding on inner knee, and retention loops to prevent straps from shifting and rubbing.
Flappy Strappy The one thing we did find though is that the knee section is quite wide, great for protection but maybe no so good for flat out race style pedalling…saying that they’re not that big, it’s just more noticeable. I’d say they’d be ideal for an earn your turn kind of rider, you know the type, rides up with the pads on the camelbak…and then hauls down. With the easy fit, without removing your shoes…they’ll definitely be a hit. With other companies out there who have been producing knee/shin combo for a while, the LZ KSC has got it’s work cut out for it. If you’re finding it difficult getting a decent set of pads then look no further. Try these and you’ll be impressed by the quality and fit. They might not be the first choice for a racer but with the freeride market exploding right now…I guess they’re pitched just right.
