Nema Crown Jewel £65

What Mountain Bike June 2009
Summer Clothing Group Test

Nema's Crown Jewel shorts have been around for years now and although frequent updates have kept them bang up-to-date in terms of materials, Nema has stuck with a sewn-in liner while other manufacturers have moved to separate garments for better fit and versatility.

Stretch panels allow you freedom of movement where the tough ripstop nylon outer won't budge, but it's not enough to stop the area between crotch and waist bunching up, both on and off the bike. Drawstring waists are always phenomenally unflattering on even the skinniest of riders, and the lack of a fly made comfort stops a pain.

An audio port on the zipped rear pocket is a nice touch but features are otherwise rather scarce, although the lack of leg vents isn't really a significant problem as the 10in inseam allows for plenty of ventilation - even if it flashes rather too much thigh for some tastes.
